Chapter Fifteen
That morning, before leaving the island, Adrian felt almost hungover, as though he were recovering from too much of something, his mind overloaded with the goings-on of the night before. For some reason he felt strong, confident and impassioned now, fully in tune with his capabilities and primed to take on any challenge, no matter how demanding. His recollection of the previous night’s events was still vivid, especially the sense of “floating” over the crowd he’d experienced and the magical rush that had come with it: like all his body fluids were boiling and coursing through him at tremendous speeds, pumping him up like a balloon. No drug had ever given Adrian such a high, had even come close. And somehow everything that happened there—including the liaison with Maria afterward—had served as a spark to ignite his spirit and destroy the feebleness, which had infected him like a plague since September.
It was all so confusing. How did a Cuban religion and his dreams tie in, he wondered? He needed to find out more about Santeria. Ever since the ritual he’d been going over and over countless riddles, trying to fathom how his dreams had foretold the experiences he had in Cuba. He only let Jennifer in on a few facts about the previous night’s events: that he’d almost passed out during the ceremony and had a sensation of floating over the crowd. Naturally she seemed quite concerned, worried even, and warned him about any further delving into Santeria.
Of course, Sosa had been worried too after the ritual. Adrian was walking along the road to the resort when he’d caught sight of the Cuban. For nearly two hours Sosa had been riding the bike all over the village, as well as up and down the road, searching for his tourist friend. After Adrian called out to him, the Cuban seemed relieved to find him in good shape. Adrian explained that he’d been overcome by the heat and noise, and had left the house to get some air and start back down the hill to the resort. He made no mention of Maria.
The sun shone burning bright after breakfast as Adrian and Jennifer waited in their villa for the limousine to arrive. Sosa joined them to say goodbye, as invigorated as ever despite his lack of sleep.
“Here,” said Adrian, passing him a plastic bag, “I want you to have these.”
Sosa peeked inside and pulled out a Versace silk shirt and Nike running shoes—obviously items unavailable in Cuba. “I can’t take your clothes,” he said, smiling a little and shaking his head.
“Sure you can. I want you to have them…because you’ve given me a lot. And I’m pretty sure our foot size is the same.”
“I am truly flabbergasted, Adrian,” Sosa said, his fingers running over the sheen of the silk. “Thank you. And if there’s anything I can do for you…”
“I want to learn more about Santeria.”
Jennifer’s mouth dropped.
The Cuban cited an article in a scientific journal, which he claimed was the most comprehensive information about Santeria in the English language.
